Barfield is a 2001 graduate of Klein High School and a fourth-round selection (120th overall) of the San Diego Padres in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. He made his Major League debut with San Diego on April 3, 2006 and appeared in 150 games for the Padres that season hitting .280 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs.
