Barfield is a 2006 graduate of Klein High School. He was selected by the New York Mets in the ninth round (274th overall) of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft but did not sign. Barfield played two seasons (2007 and 2008) at San Jacinto College before being selected by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round (244th overall) of the 2008 MLB draft. Barfield is a 2001 graduate of Klein High School and a fourth-round selection (120th overall) of the San Diego Padres in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. He made his Major League debut with San Diego on April 3, 2006 and appeared in 150 games for the Padres that season hitting .280 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs.
