'Miracle babies' celebrated on 'Wall of Hope' at Texas Children's

published Aug. 8, 2012

A tiny 3.5-pound, 15-inch baby boy was born June 26, 2007, with a rare and serious condition called Eagle-Barrett Syndrome.

His name is Tyler Broussard, and within minutes of his birth, he had surgery on a urethral blockage, which caused the surgery that could have killed him. More surgeries followed for infections and other setbacks, keeping him in the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for 151 days.

On the 152nd day, Tyler, who wasn't supposed to survive the pregnancy, and his mom, Carmen, left the Texas Children's Hospital to go home. He had a ventilator, tracheotomy, feeding pump and feeding tube — but he was going home.

Though he may never be free of health problems, Tyler continues to thrive through the hospital staff's care, and his and the stories of two other "miracle babies" will be seen in photographs on permanent display in the hospital's Newborn Center.

"Wall of Hope" was created by the center's Family Advisory Committee, which is charged with comforting and providing hope to families who have a baby staying in the NICU.

The exhibit will show Tyler, Major Pentifallo and Zach Christian's pictures, showing their progression from NICU babies to present-day thriving children. It can be found in the West Tower of the hospital, located at 6621 Fannin St. in Houston.
