Spring/Klein Roundup: Area squads start playoff runs
While Klein, Klein Collins and Tomball prepare to play best-of-three bidistrict series, it's going to be one-and-done for Klein Oak or College Park in the opening round of the Class 5A Region II baseball playoffs.
Klein Oak, which tied Klein for the 13-5A championship and was awarded the district's No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker, meets College Park in a one-game playoff at 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, at College Park with the winner instantly moving to the second round against Georgetown or Austin Bowie.
And the loser facing a sudden end to the season.
Klein Oak beat Dekaney 13-3, and Klein held off Spring 2-1, in district finales to gives Klein Oak and Klein 11-3 league finishes and the co-title.
Klein faces Atascocita in the opening round with game one at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Klein, game two 7 p.m. Friday at Atascocita, and if needed, game three at noon Saturday, May 7, at Humble.
Klein Collins ended up third in 13-5A after falling to Klein Forest 7-4 last week, and the Tigers are taking on Lufkin in the first round with the series continuing at 7 p.m. Friday, and if needed, at 3 p.m. Saturday in Kingwood.
Tomball got in on the very last night of the regular season thanks to an 11-2 victory at Westfield, and Spring being edged by Klein.
The Cougars closed district at 8-6 and a game ahead of Spring and Klein Forest, and it was especially painful for Spring which swept Tomball during district.
District 14-5A champion The Woodlands is Tomball's opening-round opponent and game one is 7 p.m. Thursday at The Woodlands, game two 7 p.m. Friday at Tomball, and if needed, game three at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tomball.
Tomball coach Rick Lynch has seen his Cougars eliminate The Woodlands two out of the last three seasons.
Klein sophomore Emily Olivier takes on Duncanville's Jocelle Rudico in the Class 5A girls singles quarterfinals at the University Interscholastic League State Tournament at 9 a.m. Monday, May 9.
It's Olivier's first trip to state in spring tennis (she's been in team tennis in the fall), and a win in the opening round puts her in the state semifinals against Katy Taylor's Erika Emery or San Antonio O'Connor's Mariana Rong at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
The other quarterfinal matchups are Clements' Isha Gandhi vs. San Antonio Churchill's Taryn Strahl, and The Woodlands Cathrine Wythe vs. Southlake Carroll's Kelley Anderson.
The 5A girls finals are at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 10.
Klein also has Precious and Princess Gbadamosi set to compete in 5A girls doubles at state.
Half of the District 13-5A softball playoff contingent advanced out of the first round of the 5A Region III bracket with Tomball and Klein Collins moving on, and Klein Oak and Klein being eliminated.
Klein Oak was blanked 3-0 by Kingwood, and Klein fell to the state's No. 1 Class 5A team, The Woodlands, in a 12-0 and 10-0 sweep.
Tomball continues against Austin Bowie in one-game area playoff at 6 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Bryan High School, and Round Rock is next for Klein Collins in a best-of-three series with game one at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at Round Rock, game two at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at Klein Collins, and if needed, game three comes right after game two.
