Klein HS grad Joshua Barfield blasts home run in Ironpig victory
Klein High School graduate Joshua Barfield hit his eighth home run of the season to lead the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs past the Norfolk tides, 4-3, in pro baseball action on Monday.
Barfield went 3-for-4 with the solo home run in the victory.
Barfield is a 2001 graduate of Klein High School and a fourth-round selection (120th overall) of the San Diego Padres in the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. Barfield spent five seasons (2001 to 2005) in the Padres' organization. During 2003 at advanced single-A Lake Elsinore of the California League, Barfield batted .337 with 46 doubles, 16 home runs and 128 RBIs. He was named a Baseball America first-team minor league all star, a California League all star, California League MVP, high-A all-star, high-A player of the year, and San Diego's minor league player of the year. Barfield was San Diego's top rated prospect in 2004 and 2005 as determined by Baseball America. Barfield made his Major League debut with San Diego on April 3, 2006, and appeared in 150 games for the Padres that season hitting .280 with 13 homers and 58 RBIs. He was traded to Cleveland after the 2006 campaign and appeared in 130 games during 2007 with Cleveland batting .243 with three homers and 50 RBIs. He spent 2008 and 2009 in the Cleveland organization appearing in only 29 games over two years with the Indians while spending the bulk of his time with Triple-A Columbus of the International League. Barfield signed as a free agent with San Diego after the 2009 season, and spent all of 2010 with Portland of the Pacific Coast League (Triple-A) hitting .294 with five home runs and 36 RBIs. Barfield is the son of MLB veteran Jesse Barfield and was born Dec. 17, 1982, in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.
