Lone Star College tops college, university list
The Lone Star College System ranked first on the Houston Business Journal's list of "Largest Houston-Area Colleges and Universities."
Based on fall 2011 enrollment statistics, the LSC System had 75,680 students attending its six colleges. With the inclusion of non-credit students, the enrollment number jumps to more than 90,000 students. From 2009 to 2011, attendance grew by more than 16,000, a 28 percent increase.
“Our mission is to be the best, not the biggest,” said Richard Carpenter, the school's chancellor, in a press release. “Students choose Lone Star College because they know they can receive a quality education, with an affordable tuition, close to home.”
Second on the list of largest area colleges was Houston Community College, followed by the University of Houston, the San Jacinto College District and the University of Houston-Downtown.
