School garden grows through partnerships

Several gardens at Gloria Marshall Elementary School have popped up with the help of volunteers and local businesses.

The Home Depot in Magnolia donated enough lumber to build 10 raised gardens.

Fourth-graders have started planting vegetables, some of which were donated by Bonnie Plants. The Scotts Company donated 270 bags of soil.

The students will track the growth and graph the water and plant cycles. The students hope to sell the plants to fund a celebration at the end of the school year.

Westfield student earns distinction degree

Westfield High School senior Adriene Glenwood Preston received Premier Distinction, the National Forensic League’s highest degree of membership for students.

The degree denotes excellence in many areas including classroom involvement, competitions and service projects.

Adriene has been a part of speech and debate at the school since his first year. He has participated in annual competitions in student congress and debate, and he qualified for the national student congress during his junior year.

Allen-Crowder named Spring ISD director

Christina Allen-Crowder has been named the Spring Independent School District community relations director.

The Texas City native's responsibilities will include serving as the district’s liaison with the Spring ISD Education Foundation.

Allen-Crowder served on the La Marque ISD Education Foundation board of directors for five years. She served as marketing co-chair and event chair for the American Cancer Society’s Mainland Relay for Life and as a member of the Cultural Health Initiatives Task Force of the American Heart Association.

She has a bachelor of arts degree in English and Spanish from UT-Austin and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from UT School of Law.

Wunsche students assist with dental hygiene exams

Students from Carl Wunsche Senior High School recently helped conduct limited dental hygiene exams for more than 80 students at Jenkins Elementary School.

The exams were led by Dr. William Gray, a dentist with Sharpstown Dental Health Services.

Some students will receive further treatment at the dental facility at Wunsche.

Students from Lorie Jones’ dental class at Wunsche helped by maintaining a clean work area, recording exam findings and making dental hygiene presentations to the children.

The exams were part of a grant made possible by the Wrigley Jr. Company Foundation in conjunction with the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.
