“Male birds’ roles in raising young are very different from one species to another,” Just For The Birds owner Kathy Coward said.

Not many know that, just like humans, male birds from certain species help in building a solid home life for their chicks.

The male downy woodpecker, for instance, excavates a cavity in a tree to make room for the female to lay her eggs. Once the eggs are laid, the father takes turns warming the eggs with the mother until they hatch. When the chicks are ready, the male downy woodpecker helps feed them and teaches them to become independent by leading them to food.

Emperor penguin fathers stand in groups, each one with an egg under him. This warms the eggs in the freezing Antarctic weather while the mothers go fishing for food.

The male wren makes many nests for the female to choose from, and when she has chosen which one she likes best, she makes it into her and her eggs’ home.
