Spring ISD JROTC gets the spotlight

Members of the Spring Independent District's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps are taking their organization's message into the community.

During a special presentation, Westfield Cadet Lt. Col. Quanzel Caston, Dekaney Cadet Cmdr. Diana Huaman, Spring High Cadet Capt. Sarah Thompson and Spring High Cadet Cmdr. Michelle Browning spoke about the JROTC's districtwide focus. Key principles of the program include rigorous training, academic success, community service, leadership development and pursuing post-secondary education.

"We teach our cadets the importance of honor, courage and commitment. We teach them how to be both successful followers and effective leaders while the main focus is on providing opportunities for both our present and our future," said Browning, who will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy next year, in a press release.

Nearly 800 students are enrolled in JROTC at the district's three high schools. Several cadets have received scholarships and are planning to attend college next year. Among the three high schools, more than $3.5 million in scholarships is given to cadets.

Also, the Westfield Battalion's academic and leadership team has qualified to participate in a national competition in Washington, D.C. In addition, the Dekaney Wildcat Battalion is the Texas Area 10 Navy JROTC State Champion.
