Andrea Schlottman of Spring heads to South Africa for Peace Corps.

Spring resident Andrea Mie Schlottman, 23, started a new job with the Peace Corps.

Schlottman departed July 10 for South Africa, where she will be a primary school teacher volunteer. Her role will also entail supporting initiatives to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.

The daughter of Darryl and Amy Schlottman, she is a graduate of Klein High School. In 2011, Schlottman earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies and Spanish from Texas A&M University.

In order to fully immerse herself in the country’s language and culture, Schlottman will live with a host family during her first three months of service. Once orientation is complete, she will be assigned to a community, where she will live and work for two years with locals.

“I’ve always been interested in traveling and charitable work and the Peace Corps seems to be the perfect combination of both,” Schlottman said in a press release. “I hope to gain firsthand development experience and come to know another culture and language.”

Schlottman joins the 424 Texas residents currently serving in the Peace Corps.
