Montgomery County leaders join forces to present community safety program

Montgomery County leaders are joining forces to present a community safety program relating to the dangers of driving drunk and texting while driving.

The program is part of the Lipsticks and Dipsticks Car Care Clinic hosted by Milstead Automotive president Amy Milstead. The event, which runs from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20 at Milstead Automotive, is free and open to the public. Featured speakers during the event will include newly-elected Montgomery County Constable Precinct 3 Ryan Gable, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon and the newly-formed Montgomery County Bar Owners Alliance.

"With the recent drunk driving fatalities I thought we could come together as a community and focus on safety in our community and on our roadways," Milstead said in a press release.

Milstead was involved with spearheading the recent Move Over legislation to keep emergency vehicles and their drivers safe as part of her long history of community safety.

"Everything we do from our events to our towing service to our Last Call program to servicing your vehicle is enveloped in our progressive theme of community safety," she said. "We want our customers, our roadways, our emergency vehicles and our community safe."

In response to accidents in Montgomery County involving drunk driving, a new group of bar owners in Montgomery County has formed to focus on community safety.

"We have formed a group of bar owners to create compelling designated driver programs within their establishments and to adhere to a code of standards of excellence by not over-serving our customers or over-looking their state of mind when leaving our establishments," said Martin Wilgers, Communications Director for the Montgomery County Bar Owners Alliance, in the press release. "Many of us have a proven history of paying for cabs for customers who have over-imbibed and we share the same community safety focus as Amy which is to keep our customers, our community and our roadways safe."

Presenting a program on law enforcement and personal responsibility will be Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon. Also presenting will be Kyle Sherburne of the Kyle Sherburne State Farm Insurance Agency with information on the Steer Clear program the dangers of texting and driving.

Special guest for the evening is Carly Winsmann, who recently won Milstead's Video Ambassador Award with her submission on anti-texting while driving. Both Winsmann and Milstead were featured on FOX26 News focusing on Milstead's anti-distracted driving video contest hosted annually in conjunction with the Conroe Independent School District.
