High school football: Cy Creek edges Klein Oak in a thriller
In a high school football contest that was always within reach for both teams, Cy Creek finally outplayed Klein Oak to take a 24-21 victory in its season opener at Pridgeon Stadium on Friday, Sept. 7.
Cy Creek had the home crowd cheering early, taking a 17-0 lead, but Klein Oak came roaring back and made it 17-14 by the end of the third. Each team scored in the fourth quarter, and neither could draw away by more than three points.
The Cougars are now 1-0 on the season, making a winner out of coach Greg McCaig in their opening game.
Quarterback Cole Barbe was 29-for-40, throwing for 236 yards and three touchdowns. Thomas also rushed for 17 yards on eight carries.
Terrell Aldridge rushed for 83 yards and Davion Masters added 50.
Kevin Patterson kicked a 25-yard field goal, which held up to provide the winning margin.
Overall, Cy Creek totaled 386 yards, while Klein Oak came away with 340. Cy Creek was penalized eight times for 46 yards, while Klein Oak was flagged seven times for 57 yards. Cy Creek fumbled twice.
The Cougars will look to keep their winning way when they visit Cy Ranch on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
Klein Oak is now 1-1 and will look to turn things around for coach David Smith when it visits Kingwood on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
Panthers quarterback Jordan Davis threw for 134 yards and a touchdown but was picked off three times.
Michael Trotter rushed 10 times for 45 yards.
