Spring ISD students participate in Lone Star Leadership Academy camps

Four students from Spring Independent School District participated in 2012 Lone Star Leadership Academy camps.

Students from Spring chosen to participate were Emily Murphy, of Burchett Elementary School, who attended the Dallas/Fort Worth camp; Xavier Pittman, of Jenkins Elementary School, who attended the Dallas/Fort Worth camp; JaMesia Leach, of Bammel Middle School, who attended the Austin/San Antonio camp; and Niaysia Wilson, of Bailey Middle School, who attended the Houston/Galveston camp.

The camps were divided by grade. Students in grades four to six went to Dallas/Fort Worth, grades five to seven went to Austin/San Antonio and grades six to eight went to Houston/Galveston.

At the camps, students participated in many activities. To further their skills, students joined delegations, completed problem solving exercises and participated in decision-making simulations. They spent time visiting sites that are historically, politically and scientifically important such as the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District and many others.

Students were selected for the camps based on academic success, leadership, school and community activities, and a recommendation from an educator.

The camps ran during spring and summer breaks.
