U.S. Passports technically have only nine years and six months of life, as the U.S. Customs wants American travelers to have at least six months remaining in their document when they return from their international trips, including the Caribbean.  Fox Travel, an American Express representative, helps its clients to avoid the inconvenience of last minute renewal by reminding them of their passport's expiration eight months in advance.

For those applying for a passport for the first time, the initial passport book costs $135 for adults, with additional passport pages costing $82.  Processing fee is priced at $25, while expedited passport processing service is $60.  The renewal fee for passport books is $110.  And the wallet-sized passport card, which Americans can use on certain trips closer to home, is available at $55 for first-time applicants.

"Remember," Daniels says, "start the renewal process six months prior to the expiration of your current passport, as the documentation must be valid for six months after your return from foreign travel."
