Salvation Army Houston Area Command Ready to Respond in Hurricane Affected Areas

The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command staff and volunteers are ready to respond as needed in the affected areas of Hurricane Sandy's aftermath.

"In New York City, officials from the Office of Emergency Management have appointed The Salvation Army as the lead agency for the city's Food Access Plan, to coordinate feeding at city shelters. We're also already at work trying to serve those without power. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers," said Juan Alanis of Houston's Salvation Army branch.

The Salvation Army is one of the nation's largest providers of disaster service and responds to hundreds of disasters across the country each year.  Here is how donations help the overall disaster relief efforts:

1.     A $10 donation feeds a disaster survivor for one day.

2.     A $30 donation provides one food box, containing staple foods for a family of four, or one household cleanup kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets and other cleaning supplies.

3.     A $100 donation can serve snacks and drinks for 125 survivors and emergency personnel at the scene of a disaster.

4.     A $250 donation can provide one hot meal to 100 people or keep a hydration station operational for 24 hours.

5.     A $500 donation keeps a Salvation Army canteen (mobile feeding unit) fully operational for one day.
