With their bright red plumage, cardinals are one of the most attractive birds in Northern America. They don't migrate, and they do not molt into a duller color at this time of the year (the adults do molt—or replace their feathers in mid-August to early-September), hence they keep their beautiful appearance throughout most of the year. "The northern cardinal is one of the most beautiful of all our birds," said Kathy Coward, bird enthusiast and owner of Just for the Birds. "Seven states in the Eastern U.S. count the northern cardinal as their state bird."

Said to mate for life, cardinals like to build their cup-shaped nests out of twigs, bark strips and leaves in thick foliage, where the female can lay from two to five buff white-colored eggs, which one can recognize by their distinct dark marks. Both male and female cardinals share in the feeding of the young when the eggs hatch. The birds are, therefore, attracted to places where they can nest as well as find food, water and shelter.
