Spring ISD school board approves 2013-14 calendar

The Spring Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the school calendar for the 2013-14 academic year at its meeting Wednesday, Jan 15.

According to a district press release, school will begin Monday, Aug. 26 and end Tuesday, June 3, 2014.

Two proposed calendars were prepared by the Spring ISD Advisory Committee on Education, and online surveys by staff members and parents were conducted in December.

Dr. Dalane Bouillion, associate superintendent for curriculum and instructional services, presented the committee's recommendation for calendar B to the board for approval. The recommendation was based on survey results.

"The significant differences between calendar options A and B are Thanksgiving break and the last day of school," said Bouillion, in the press release. "Calendar option B allows a full week off at Thanksgiving and ends the school year June 3, while option A would allow only three days off for Thanksgiving and end the school year May 29."

More than 2,600 staff and parents participated in the survey in which 75.6 percent of respondents chose option B.

The approved calendar will give students from Monday, Nov. 25 through Friday, Nov. 29 off for Thanksgiving, two weeks off for winter break from Monday, Dec. 23 to Friday, Jan. 3, 2014 and one week off for spring break from Monday, March 10, 2014 to Friday, March, 14, 2014.
